These are the most unique jobs in hospitality

Op zoek naar een nieuwe baan kom je soms de leukste buitenkansjes tegen. Ben je het normale werk als receptionist in het hotel wel beu, maar wil je eens iets

When looking for a new job, you occasionally come across the most unique opportunities. Are you tired of the standard work as a hotel receptionist, but do you want to try something different within hospitality? Then we have good news, because several companies have exciting vacancies available.

Working in hospitality: here are your opportunities

For instance, you have the chance to work as a hotel tester—comparable to a mystery shopper in retail, but much more fun. If you know everything about food and love creating beautiful dishes, you could also get started as a food stylist. Additionally, there are jobs available that focus less on hotels and more on the broader sense of hospitality. After all, if you are good with people, these roles are perfect for you. Around half a million people work in the Dutch hospitality and catering sector, and you could be next.

Hotel Tester

It is a unique opportunity in the hospitality world: becoming a hotel tester. Travelling the world and staying in the globe's most luxurious hotels at the client's expense. And you even get paid for it! That is what a hotel tester does. But take note: you need to be quite critical. You have to assess the hotels based on various criteria. Think, for example, of service, facilities such as the bathroom, cleanliness, and hospitality. It is certainly a great job for someone who visits hotels regularly and now wants to share their opinion on a professional level.

Food Stylist

If food is your favourite subject, then a job as a food stylist is right up your alley. Everyone has a cookbook at home with beautiful photos of interesting dishes. But when you assemble such a dish yourself, it often looks quite different than you had imagined beforehand. And that is exactly the point of a food stylist. A food stylist is the person who ensures that all the food is arranged beautifully for the camera. You might be hired, for example, to film a commercial for a new food product. Your task is then to arrange the food in a way that makes it look attractive and interesting. There are all sorts of tricks involved that the average viewer wouldn't notice. Bonus: as a food stylist, you don't just work in marketing, but you also visit the most exclusive and luxurious restaurants.

(Online) Casino Employee

Is cooking or being creative not for you, and would you rather work with people? If you are a good game leader, can maintain a clear overview, and have strong analytical skills, you could become a casino employee. Think, for example, of a croupier who manages all the games. The goal is to ensure that table games such as poker or blackjack can be played smoothly. Additionally, you need to be very hospitable: provide snacks and drinks for the guests and make sure they are enjoying themselves. With a cover letter you can prove that you have everything it takes for this job. After all, you need to be a good salesperson.

You continuously ensure that all games run correctly and that the casino remains clean and tidy. Furthermore, you are the person who congratulates the winners and pays out the money. If you prefer not to work in a physical casino, you can probably find a spot at one of the online casinos. More and more online gambling companies are looking for croupiers and other staff, particularly for live casino games. You will likely have to (temporarily) emigrate to a country like Cyprus or Malta for this.

Oyster Sommelier

Are you crazy about oysters and want to offer advice on them? Then you might decide to become an oyster sommelier. You read that right—this profession actually exists! Normally, a sommelier specialises in wines and advises visitors on which wine best suits the dish they are served. Your task as an oyster sommelier is much the same: you have an advisory role in choosing oysters. For instance, you recommend the right oysters for a specific mood or dish. You might say an oyster is just an oyster and it doesn't really matter. But appearances are deceptive, as they all have a different flavour profile, and with the right seasonings, oysters can be tailored specifically to a person's taste. This makes it a very special role.

Ice Sculptor

The SBS6 television programme ‘IJsmeesters: een koud kunstje’ is all about creating the most beautiful ice sculptures. Are you creative and do you dare to take a few risks during your work to achieve the best result? If so, you could start a career as an ice sculptor. You will create ice sculptures commissioned by clients—think of logos or lettering, for example. Or perhaps an animal, if your client is a zoo. Ice sculptors are constantly challenged to think creatively. They work on their sculptures in cold warehouses. You must be able to handle the fact that all your hard work will eventually be undone, as ice, of course, is destined to melt.
